Venus detail by S. Botticelli c. 1448

Venus, the planet of relationships, love, the arts, as well as finances, is retrograde the entire month of January. This retrograde began December 21, 2013 and will end January 31, 2014. When planets are retrograde their energies are more internal, and subjective, and so we have the opportunity to understand more deeply the energies of the planet that is retrograde. So with this in mind, there is a great opening during the month of January to make greater spiritual progress revolving around any difficult Venus issues we may have.

With Venus retrograde this month, issues or feelings surface around unfinished business we have in relationships, as well as how we view love. This “unfinished” business could even bring to surface events or memories that originated from prior lifetimes – a theme we may be living now that is harming us. Letting go of incorrect beliefs about the nature of love and redefining the essence of compassion is helpful. True intimacy comes from integrity, by expressing the healthiest part of you.

During this month we may become more aware of how we block our expression of love, as a way to not feel hurt again. Challenging the frightened parts of self, learning appropriate detachment, creating healthy boundaries, and expressing mutual respect in relationship are all possible lessons as well. Reflect on how you can now handle things differently. Areas where we feel a lack of emotional fulfillment can also surface to heal. We are learning to value, respect and heal ourselves, which will then reflect outwardly in our world.

Venus began its retrograde in the sign of Capricorn December 21, 2013, and will go back to the sign of Sagittarius on January 6, 2014. When Venus is in Capricorn the first part of January, we are able to be more realistic, practical and grounded in love and values. Proper boundaries are a big key. With Venus transiting the sign of Sagittarius starting January 6 through February 26, the emphasis is more on universal love and higher consciousness. Being straightforward, courageous, and even blunt in relationships and in self-analysis is emphasized. The sign of Sagittarius does not like superficiality.

Venus will be traveling with the Sun in Sagittarius from January 6 – 14, 2014. On January 11, 2014, Venus will be exactly combust the Sun at 27 degrees Sagittarius. Sometimes Venus combust the Sun gives artistic, healing energies, but can bring a challenge in finding relationship/love fulfillment in the outer world. Imbalances surface, in order to give us insights on areas to heal.

Venus will be heavily influenced by four planets while in Sagittarius during January: Jupiter retrograde, Saturn, Mars, and Ketu (south node of the Moon). The Jupiter retrograde opposite Venus retrograde can help soften the other malefic aspects, but watch for over-exaggeration and too high expectations.

Exalted Saturn aspects Venus retrograde exactly at 27 degrees Sagittarius on January 9 – 10, 2014, indicating a more mature, committed, and patient stance with relationships, love, and money. This aspect can also give restriction or delay with others if we are not paying attention, demanding we open our heart, and face things directly and honestly in the present moment.

On January 16, Mars aspects Venus exactly at 24 degrees Sagittarius. This aspect can create tension in relationship or with the things we value. This can also bring increased passion and energy, but be careful with competitiveness and conflicts surfacing with others. Focus on self-care, patience, and compassion.

If your Ascendant is Taurus or Libra (ruled by Venus) then this Venus retrograde period may influence you more. Also, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants are affected, as Venus is their planet of power. And if you are in a Venus dasha or bhukti (major or minor planetary cycle) this is an important transit for you.

Venus remedial measures include the planetary mantra, Om Shukraya Namaha, or mantras honoring the Venus deity Lakshmi. Work with your feminine, receptive side, and honor the Divine Feminine. Venus also relates to the path of Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of devotion.
